Class 7 CBSE students use four core NCERT books: Ganita Prakash for Maths in two parts (8 and 7 chapters), Curiosity for Science (12 chapters), Exploring Society: India and Beyond for Social Science in two parts (12 and 8 chapters) and Poorvi for English (5 units). All are reprinted for 2026-27 and differ from older Class 7 books. Class 7 has no board exam, so your school sets the exams and decides the order of chapters. Make sure your child has both parts of Maths and Social Science.
What is different about Class 7 now
- New books. NCERT's Class 7 Maths Part I and Science were first published in April 2025, and Maths Part II in October 2025. Chapter names and order differ from earlier editions, so older guides, worksheets and notes will not map one-to-one.
- Two parts for Maths and Social Science. Both parts are part of the syllabus.
- An activity-based style. NCERT says the Maths books weave storytelling and hands-on activities together and encourage students to find many ways to solve problems, and that the Science book aims for hands-on learning over rote memorisation. Tests in this style often check understanding, as we explain in our guide to competency-based questions.
- A third language. R3 is compulsory from Class 6 in 2026-27, and it continues into Class 7 in 2027-28. See our three-language policy guide.
You can see the official books on NCERT's textbook page. The chapter lists below come from the contents pages of the 2026-27 editions.

Where children often need extra support: NCERT's own note to teachers suggests giving more time to the ideas that are new to students, naming congruence of triangles and central tendency. Algebra also begins here, in Part I Chapter 4 and Part II Chapter 7, and Class 8 builds on it. Integers (Part II Chapter 2) and fractions (Part I Chapter 8) are other chapters where a gap quickly shows. Our guide to improving your child's maths marks gives a practical plan.
Science: Curiosity (12 chapters)
Curiosity for Grade 7 is the second book in the series and picks up from Grade 6. NCERT says it combines concepts from biology, chemistry, physics and earth science and continues to focus on the nature of science and its processes.
| Group | Chapters |
|---|---|
| How science works | 1. The Ever-Evolving World of Science |
| Matter and changes | 2. Exploring Substances: Acidic, Basic, and Neutral; 4. The World of Metals and Non-metals; 5. Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical |
| Electricity, heat, time and light | 3. Electricity: Circuits and their Components; 7. Heat Transfer in Nature; 8. Measurement of Time and Motion; 11. Light: Shadows and Reflections |

Because the book is activity-based, children who enjoy experiments and questions tend to do well. A good habit is to ask your child to explain one activity from each chapter, including why it worked. See also our science revision tips.

By Class 7, English tests usually ask for longer written answers and short pieces of writing. Regular reading and a few sentences of writing every day help far more than last-minute grammar drills. See our guides on English writing skills and reading habits.

How to plan the year
- Get both parts. Make sure your child has Maths Part I and Part II, and Social Science Part 1 and Part 2, and ask when each part will be taught.
- Ask for the annual plan. Schools decide the order of chapters and exam dates, so this tells you what is coming.
- Revise soon after teaching. A short weekly recall, using the questions at the end of each chapter, prevents the end-of-term pile-up.
- Watch the new ideas. Algebra, integers and congruence are where Class 7 gaps often start. If marks slip, read why marks drop in Classes 6 to 8 before adding more hours.
- Look ahead. Class 8 builds on Class 7. See our Class 8 syllabus guide and, for the Class 6 books, the Class 6 guide.
Where tuition fits
Class 7 tuition works best when it targets specific chapters, such as algebra or integers in Maths, and keeps pace with what the school is teaching now. TutorHive's online tuition for Classes 5 to 12 covers maths, science, English and social studies. You can watch a free 30-minute demo class before deciding anything. See also online classes for Class 7.
A note on sources: chapter lists and descriptions come from the 2026-27 reprints of NCERT's Class 7 textbooks. Schools may rearrange chapters or add school-level content, so treat your school's annual plan as the final word.
