Are they re-reading or actively recalling? Re-reading a textbook feels productive but produces weak retention. Active recall — closing the book and writing or saying everything you remember about a chapter — is far more effective and surfaces gaps immediately.
Are they getting feedback on their practice? Solving problems without checking answers, or checking only whether the answer is right without reviewing the method, produces no improvement. Every practice problem should be followed by a check of the method, not just the answer.
Are they practising what they find hard? Students naturally gravitate towards chapters and question types they find easy. Exam scores are determined by performance on hard questions, not easy ones.
